Defining the Problem: The Chaos of Shared Bikes
​

 since the first half of 2016, due to the “last mile” problem of urban travel, shared bikes have swept through first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in China. More than 40 shared bike companies have emerged between 2016 and 2017 alone. According to incomplete statistics, the shared bike market financing has exceeded 7 billion yuan. However, only OFO and Mobai remain in operation until 2018, and neither has achieved a profit model.

In recent years, with the intensification of urban transportation and environmental problems, the benefits of bike transportation have begun to be remembered by the government and the public. The promotion of bike traffic has begun to appear in the development vision of many cities. In 2016, There’s a wave of shared bikes in China. However, the number of shared bikes that surged far exceeded the capacity of cities, and a large number of shared bikes were abandoned.

 Between 2016 and 2017, there were more than 40 shared bike companies, and the shared bike market raised more than 7 billion yuan. However, in the past year alone, only two companies are still operating, and neither has achieved profitability mode. 

Hypothesis

 The use of shared bikes is directly affected by the following three main stakeholders: shared bike operating companies, government and users. The main indicators provided by shared bike companies are: repair services, bike scheduling and rent; the main indicators provided by the government is the quality of greenway and rent. In addition, public awareness also affects the use of shared bikes.

Proposing a Solution: Steps to Help Shared Bikes Return to the City

Rent Subsidy Program 

If the user chooses to park the bike at the public parking spot, or the shared bike is rented by the next user within 15 minutes after parking, the user will receive a voucher, the rental vouchers can be used for the next use.

Build Repair Station 

Build repair stations to help repair damaged shared bikes. 

 

Advertisement for Public Awareness â€‹

Invest in one year of advertising, make subway advertisements and advertisements for public transportation car TV. Strengthening the public’s sense of sharing can improve the circulation efficiency of shared bikes and thus increase their usage.

 The data platform provides open source data, including the real-time location and motion trajectory of shared bikes from various companies, so that each company can know the more comprehensive and objective bike distribution and usage information. According to this shared platform, companies can schedule bikes, replenish the number of bikes in time and determine the demand for new shared bikes. 

Improved Greenway Quality

 The quantity and quality of greenways is fundamental to the use of shared bikes. In Guangzhou, the total length of greenways is about 3,000 kilometers, which is enough to meet the needs of citizens. However, there is a lack of connection between the greenways, and the greenways are always occupied, and blocked is an urgent problem to be solved. High-quality greenways need to meet the requirements of safety and comfort, that is, separated from the motorway and shaded by street trees.
